Artist Statement

My exploration of lino-printing began five years ago as I sought to find a way to express my enjoyment of the coastal landscape of West Wales on paper.  In linocut, the craft and design process merges with artistic expression in a very pleasing way.

I take time to wander the Pembrokeshire coast path in all seasons, enjoying both the drama and the detail.  I take many photographs which I then collate into themes, and these form the basis of my print designs.

My drawn design is traced in outline onto a prepared sheet of lino. Around 12 sheets of paper are prepared and each completed print is made up of between 5 and 7 layers of ink, so that can mean 84 runs through the press to complete each edition.

The technique of reduction linocut involves a gradual carving away of areas of lino, building up layering of ink, usually from the lightest shades through to darker ones, until the last details go in. I enjoy the mixing of colour hues and tones, mainly from primary colours, and learning how they respond to and complement one another.

My prints are all hand-made in a limited edition of around 12, and each one has unique characteristics. Sometimes the edition will vary as I explore different colour possibilities. The reduction process means that no further prints can be made of that edition, since there is little of the lino block left by the finish.
